The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has once again extended telemedicine prescribing flexibilities for controlled substances. This decision, made jointly with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), was announced on October 6, 2023, and has been termed as the Second Temporary Extension of COVID-19 Telemedicine Flexibilities for Prescription of Controlled Medications (the “Second Extension”).
This follows a previous extension that was actioned in May 2023, amongst an ongoing effort to maintain necessary patient services during the COVID-19 Public Health crisis. The provision of the Second Extension continues to enable healthcare providers to offer certain controlled substances prescriptions via telemedicine, a service that holds immense importance amidst the worldwide pandemic.
These extensions tacitly acknowledge the necessity, practicality, and effectiveness of telemedicine amidst times of crisis. As the pandemic continues on, both our healthcare system and legal frameworks have needed to adapt to safely provide care while reducing the risk of spreading infection. in-person interactions have notably been minimised, hence the paramount importance of continuing to enable telemedicine provisions.
