Russian Offensive in Ukraine Intensifies with Civilian Casualties: A Mounting International Crisis

A Russian offensive operation near Avdiivka, Ukraine has led to two confirmed civilian deaths, marking the situation’s continued escalation as the offensive enters its sixth day. This information comes in a report from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, highlighting Russia’s multifaced attack approach utilizing air, artillery and large numbers of troops.

In a statement from the Head of the Avdiivka Military Administration, Vitaliy Barabash, the situation is described as one of the most extensive since Ukraine began its counteroffensive efforts. An assessment provided by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) suggests disagreement on Russian success prospects and potential Ukrainian responses.

The escalation is not contained to Avdiivka. According to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, there are responses to Russian advances in many other settlements. Over 15 such instances, including in towns such as Ocheretyne, Lastochkyne, Avdiivka, Pervomais’ke, and Nevel’s’le have been reported. It is important to note that these attacks often target areas heavily populated by civilians.

These attacks prompt concern over potential breaches in international humanitarian law, which unequivocally condemns harm towards civilians during times of armed conflict. The Geneva Convention previously emphasized the protection rights of civilians from violent acts, asserting that any act of violence, torture, or murder of civilians are considered war crimes under international laws.

In response to these assaults, Russia is being scrutinized for several civilian violence incidents such as the catastrophic airstrike on Kharkiv which resulted in at least 51 civilian casualties. This event is currently under investigation by the United Nations, and is being referred to as one of the deadliest attacks since the invasion’s initiation.
