In a recent report by the premier law firm, Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt, it was revealed that close to half of all new board appointments to Canadian public companies over the past year were women. However, it is important to note that women still account for less than one-third of total board members.
Out of the 532 board positions that expired or were created, women were selected to step into the role 45.3% of the time. The law firm’s data was detailed in their 2023 Diversity Disclosure Practices report. This rise in female appointments significantly reduced the number of boards with only one female member.
Osler has been monitoring diversity disclosures at public companies for almost a decade. Despite the positive rise in female representation, the figures for Indigenous individuals and persons with disabilities remain disappointingly low.
