Federal Trade Commission Explores GenAI Impact on Creative Industries

On October 4, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) hosted a virtual roundtable discussion to understand the impact of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) on creative fields. The roundtable discussion, convened by FTC Chair Lina M. Khan, served as a platform to explore the influence of GenAI tools on creative professions.

During the roundtable discussion, Khan acknowledged that GenAI tools could impact creators’ work and livelihood in both beneficial and harmful ways. The examination of these impacts (both positive and negative) was amongst the primary focuses of this discussion. The opportunities posed by GenAI for innovation and creativity were contrasted with concerns about potential economic and creative transformations and uncertainties.

As law professionals, it is crucial to understand the potential ripple effects of GenAI in creative fields as it underscores the need for interplay between legal structures, creative work, and emerging technologies. This roundtable discussion signals a developing interest by regulatory bodies in the sphere of GenAI and its implications on the global creative industry.
