Menopause in the Workforce: Breaking the Stigma and Supporting Female Employees

October 2023 brought forth a legal precedent as a woman claimed discrimination in the workplace due to her menopause symptoms, an issue covered extensively by the BBC. In an era where one-third of the workforce is over 50 and 80% of women aged 45 to 55 are employed, menopause-related challenges are increasingly pertinent.

The past few years have seen law firms express a strong commitment to diversify their teams and enhance female representation in leadership roles. However, very few firms provide support for those transitioning through menopause. Such neglect has direct repercussions, as 10% of women experiencing menopause symptoms have left the workforce. Moreover, approximately 12% of the workforce may be hindered in their career progression due to these symptoms.

According to TLT’s Chief People Officer, it is necessary for employers to take practical measures toward supporting women going through menopause in their workforce. Employers need to acknowledge the significant impact of menopause on work-life and understand the urgent call to alleviate any associated stigma.
