Ryna Workman, an NYU Law student and former president of NYU Law’s Student Bar Association (SBA), has faced considerable backlash after attributing the deadly Hamas attacks earlier this month to Israel. Despite this, Workman has remained steadfast, appealing for the focus to be shifted from prosecuting them to the cessation of all military aid to Israel’s far-right government by the United States.
Workman’s staunch stance has been recently defended by The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), who declared student’s right to free speech should be “wholly protected even if other students found them offensive or even hateful.” penned a letter to New York University School of Law on Monday
The Director of FIRE’s Campus Rights Advocacy, Alex Morey, specifically wrote to Troy A. McKenzie, dean of NYU Law. He suggested that more than a “cursory, internal review” wasn’t necessary, underlining the protection that should be provided to freedom of speech, irrespective of how other students perceive it.
