A rocket shell struck a peacekeeping operation location of the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon, according to UNIFIL spokesman Andrea Tenenti. The incident, however, did not result in any injuries to UN personnel. Tenenti’s announcement came on the same day as a series of attacks and counterattacks between Hezbollah militants and Israeli forces near the northern border of Lebanon.
Sunday saw the escalation of border hostility as Lebanese Hezbollah militants targeted Israeli army posts and a village close to the northern border. An attack on the farming town of Shtula by Hezbollah led to one death and three injuries, instigating fears of intensifying violence. This marked the deadliest border clash since the month-long conflict in 2006. Israel, in response, launched airstrikes in Lebanon. This turn of events added stress to an already volatile situation characterized by intermittent firing across the Israel-Lebanon border over the past week. News reports suggest increased concerns about potential escalation into a larger conflict, akin to previous clashes with Hamas militants in Gaza.
In the face of intensifying hostilities, UNIFIL, in a statement, expressed its active engagement with authorities on both sides in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. The peacekeeping body urged the involved parties to cease fire and emphasized the crucial role of peacekeepers in finding solutions. They further reminded involved parties that any attacks on civilians or UN personnel constituted a violation of international law and could potentially be classified as war crimes.
While the situation at the border remains tense, there appear to be some attempts to alleviate the tension. According to Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, Israel has no intention of launching a war on its northern front. He stated that Israel will maintain its current status at the border, given Hezbollah maintains restraint in its actions.
