Prominent Law Firms Clash Over CEO Deposition in LeClairRyan Bankruptcy Fee Dispute

Legal titans, Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan and Foley & Lardner, are engaged in an escalating legal discussion surrounding a request to depose Foley’s chairman and CEO, Daljit Doogal. The request comes as part of an ongoing dispute between these prominent law firms over several million dollars in fees derived from work carried out on the LeClairRyan bankruptcy case.

In a recent Monday submission to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, lawyers representing Foley & Lardner asked for a protective order to quash the deposition. This, they assert, is nothing more than a clear effort by Quinn Emanuel to harass and overburden the legal firm and its CEO.

On the other side of the dispute, Quinn Emanuel argues that Foley & Lardner’s request for a protective order was made too late. The firm holds that there’s a valid basis for requiring Doogal to sit for what has been scheduled as a Thursday afternoon deposition.

The dispute arises from the contingency-based representation of LeClairRyan’s bankruptcy trustee by Quinn Emanuel partners Erika Morabito and Brittany Nelson, which originally started while they were partners at Foley & Lardner. This evolving legal drama stands as a stark reminder of the complex dynamics and challenges surrounding large-scale bankruptcy cases.
