Continuing the State AG webinar series, we recently met with prominent Illinois legal professionals including Attorney General Kwame Raoul, Susan Ellis (Consumer Protection Division Chief), and Lyle Evans (Chief of Investigations). The discourse offered a deep-dive into the workings of the office and its priorities, with a specific spotlight on Organized Retail Crime and the INFORM Consumers Act.
Attorney General Kwame Raoul took the helm, providing insight into the priorities and initiatives driving his office’s efforts. Of notable interest was a focus on Organized Retail Crime, a troubling trend which sees organized groups engage in large-scale theft from retail businesses. These illicit activities, often facilitated through online platforms, severely impact retailers and consumers alike.
Heavily tied to the issue of Organized Retail Crime, attention was also given to the INFORM Consumers Act. The Act represents an important legislative effort to require online platforms to verify the identities of high-volume sellers, helping to curb illegal activities and promote transparency in online marketplaces.
In addition to the problem of Organized Retail Crime, the team also probed into other consumer protection issues. In particular, Susan Ellis, the Consumer Protection Division Chief, explored some of the major challenges facing consumers and how her office is working tirelessly to protect their rights.
Lyle Evans, Chief of Investigations, further supplemented these insights by shedding light on the investigative methods and strategies employed by his office to combat retail crime and safeguard consumers.
While the circumstances are indeed challenging, it’s evident that the Illinois legal community remains committed to the protection of consumers and ensuring fair trade. In particular, the INFORM Consumers Act serves as emblematic of these efforts towards greater transparency and accountability.
