Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, and Vice Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, were indicted by a Pakistani court on charges of revealing official secrets. In the event of their conviction, both Khan and Qureshi could face the death sentence. The accusation comes following Khan’s ousting as Prime Minister in 2022, during which he claimed that a letter he had, proved that his removal was orchestrated by the US.
Since these allegations, both Khan and Qureshi have been under investigation for the “use of official secret information and illegal retention of a cypher telegram with malafide intention.” The PTI, through social media, has condemned these accusations, maintaining that Khan and Qureshi are being victimized for advocating for Pakistan’s sovereignty and democracy.
Previously, Khan was found guilty of making false declarations about his assets to the Election Commission of Pakistan and was sentenced to a three-year imprisonment term, along with a fine of 100,000 PKR. This sentence, however, was suspended by the Islamabad High Court in late August.
The trial for the latest charges is slated to begin on Friday at the prison where Khan is being held. Both Khan and Qureshi deny all allegations against them.
