NYU Law School’s Student Bar Association Resigns En Masse Amid Controversial Pro-Palestine Remarks

In an unexpected turn of events at New York University’s School of Law (NYU Law), the whole Student Bar Association (SBA) has resigned, rendering the prestigious institution without its formally appointed student representation. This unexpected development transpired in the aftermath of a controversial incident involving the then president of NYU Law’s SBA, Ryna Workman, and her criticism of Israel as the orchestrator of Hamas’s terrorist attack.

According to an article posted in the Washington Square News, NYU’s student newspaper, the entire NYU Law SBA, including its seven members, disbanded just days after Workman sent the message via SBA’s newsletter in mid-October. This situation further complicated when subsequent attempts to email the NYU Law SBA resulted in an automated “delivery status notification,” indicating that the group no longer exists.

The disbandment of the SBA is of significant consequence to the law school’s operation, as it is traditionally responsible for organising student activities, and provides an important representation of the student body’s interests to the administration.

The former members of the SBA, however, are said to have initiated a petition that would allow the student body to elect new SBA leadership. The stipulation being, if a quarter of the student body co-signs the petition, an institution-wide vote would potentially decide the newly reformed SBA’s leadership.

This incident has undoubtedly brewed turmoil within NYU Law and presents an interesting challenge to the tradition of representative student bodies within legal education. For every practicing lawyer who understands the importance of properly functioning legal institutions, this affair will be a demonstration of how even the most esteemed of institutions can face unexpected disruptions – and further, how they navigate them.
