Senator Menendez Pleads Not Guilty in Egyptian Foreign Agent Case

New Jersey Democrat Senator Bob Menendez denied allegations of acting on Egypt’s behalf to receive bribes. On October 23, 2023, he pleaded not guilty to a new federal charge that stipulates conspiracy between himself, his wife, and a businessman; all three purportedly acted as agents of Egypt during his tenure as the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. This update was reported by David Voreacos and Patricia Hurtado, as seen in their article on Bloomberg Law.

According to the same source, the Senator’s plea was entered in a New York federal court to an amended indictment. This indictment included the foreign agent count in addition to earlier charges, where it was claimed that he and his wife, Nadine, accepted bribes. The incentives allegedly consisted of cash, gold bars, and a lavish Mercedes convertible.

The prosecution alleges that these bribes were the result of a corrupt pact with Egypt and three New Jersey businessmen. As part of this arrangement, Menendez supposedly favored these parties. The trial has already been scheduled for May 6.

The 69-year-old senator staunchly denies these allegations.
