In a bid to enhance its renewable energy portfolio, Rhode Island Energy has recently issued an Request for Proposals (RFP) for up to 1.2 GW of offshore wind. This is the first such RFP that Rhode Island has issued since the CT-RI-MA Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on joint procurements of clean energy was adopted.
The RFP solicits bids to enter into long-term power purchase agreements for energy, renewable energy certificates (RECs), and related environmental attributes. As reported, Rhode Island Energy, in consultation with the state’s Office of Energy Resources and the Division of Public Utilities and Carrier, is set to evaluate and select bids. Any contracts resulting from this process will, however, be subject to approval by the Rhode Island authorities.
Undoubtedly, this step highlights Rhode Island’s commitment to boosting its renewable energy production capabilities, a move aligned with the increased focus on renewable energies by U.S states in recent years. The procurement of 1.2 GW of offshore wind stands as testament to the scale and ambition of the state’s clean energy goals.
It remains to noted, however, that the bidding process’s outcomes and subsequent contract practicalities can impact the effectiveness of this procurement effort.
