State AGs Unite Against Meta: Lawsuit Claims Platforms Unsafe, Addictive for America’s Youth

In a move that signifies further tension between social media Goliath, Meta Platforms Inc., and legal authorities, a bipartisan coalition of Attorneys General from 41 states – including California, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania – alongside the District of Columbia, filed a federal lawsuit against the company. The lawsuit was lodged on Tuesday and alleges that Instagram and Facebook, both operated by Meta, are “unsafe and addictive” to young users.

Among other issues, the coalition claims that Meta has illegally collected data from children under the age of 13, an action purportedly in violation of U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. They argue this illicit data collection is a major contributor to the so-called ‘mental health crisis’ among America’s youth.
