Dorothy Cory-Wright, one of the most senior women at Dechert, has shared her career journey and views on changes and challenges in the legal profession in an interview with Law.com International.
From her humble beginnings entering the Bar as a state-educated, non-Oxbridge woman, Cory-Wright ascended through the ranks to become a leading figure in litigation. She recollects her experience working in a male-dominated environment, crediting her unique background for making it easy to stand out, and acknowledging the crucial role played by her male and female mentors.
Cory-Wright commends the progress made within the legal profession, noting that there are no longer gender-based stereotypes attached to certain areas of practice. However, she acknowledges that achieving greater diversity remains a challenge, particularly in management roles and the equity ranks.
She emphasises the importance of regular scrutiny and action to improve the representation of underrepresented groups, citing flexible working as a crucial element to retaining parents in the profession. Cory-Wright also advises young lawyers to not be afraid to voice their views, seek clarification, and gain exposure to different areas of the law.
Sharing her insights on what makes a great litigator, she highlights a strong knowledge of law and procedure, commercial acumen, and the ability to engender client’s continued trust in challenging times. She offers some anecdotes from her personal life and professional career, including her unforgettable involvement in the FIA stewards’ investigations into Formula 1’s “Spygate” and “Crashgate” scandals.
Finally, Cory-Wright identifies David Kendall and Dame Elizabeth Gloster as significant influences on her career. Both individuals, whom she worked with during her early years in the profession, shaped her understanding of the law and instilled confidence in her abilities.
