The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) escalated the ongoing Israel-Hamas war by deploying ground forces in the Northern Gaza Strip. This marked a significant intensification in the ongoing conflict, which saw the troops active in the area before ultimately returning to Israeli territory. The IDF confirmed that it had killed Shadi Barud, the Deputy Head of Hamas’ Intelligence Directorate, during an airstrike following the operation.
In their post-operation statement, the IDF further pledged to eliminate Hamas leaders and operatives responsible for attacks on Israel, such as those that killed more than 100 Israeli civilians on October 7. The day prior to this latest operation, the IDF eliminated Taysir Mubasher, the Commander of the Hamas North Khan Yunis Battalion. Israeli intelligence agencies attributed multiple terror attacks to Mubasher, including a beach infiltration in Zikim in 2003, a 2004 bomb that targeted IDF soldiers and the murder of five students.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health indicated that their healthcare capacity is nearing the brink of collapse due to the conflict. Hospitals are reportedly overcrowded, understaffed, and facing severe medical shortages, to the extent that some surgeries have been performed without anesthesia. Furthermore, medical services have been hindered from reaching casualties in bombing-prone areas, and the Ministry alleges that hospitals and ambulances have been targeted. The Ministry’s announcement followed a recent attack on the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital.
As of October 24, over 6,500 Palestinians have lost their lives to the ongoing conflict, with more than 17,000 reportedly injured. The international reaction to the conflict continues to develop, with reports suggesting that the United States asked Israel to delay further ground infiltrations until the Pentagon can deliver additional military supplies. This request comes after US President Joe Biden pledged $100 million in support of those displaced from the Gaza Strip and called for Congress to authorize a $14.3 billion aid package to help fund military support for Israel.
