This past week, perhaps the most active in its recent efforts to regulate Artificial Intelligence (AI), saw not only the inaugural international AI Safety Summit but also the issuance of a significant Executive Order from the US White House. The Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence by President Joe Biden marks a shift in focus from the principally individual-centric approach encapsulated in the October 2022 Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights.
The new Executive Order broadens the horizon and emphasizes a sectoral approach to mitigate risks associated with AI. The White House has assigned both Congress and the executive branch the responsibility to legislate new rules, implement taskforce and groups, and enforce the new requirements. A notable aspect of this recent decree is its clear leaning towards AI testing and transparency, underscoring its foundational principle for the safe and trustworthy use of AI technology.
