Recent controversy has enveloped Mitchell Hamline School of Law over accusations of apparent institution support for antisemitism. Prompted by the school’s response to the Israel-Hamas war and a professor’s supportive opinion of Palestine on social media, the incident led to a resignation.
Melissa Weiner, a partner at Pearson Warshaw and an adjunct professor due to start teaching at Mitchell Hamline Law in spring, relinquished her post on October 18. Weiner expressed her dissatisfaction with the school’s reaction to the Hamas-led terror attacks against Jewish people on October 7 and its alleged refusal to disassociate from the purported hate speech. In response to these accusations, Interim Law Dean Jim Hilbert sent out an email message to the school community, in which he emphasized a shared responsibility to enhance the school’s inclusive learning environment and address emotional and challenging issues. These matters include current global events, and Hilbert suggests confronting them with professionalism, self-awareness, and collegiality.
