Andy McDonald, a UK Member of Parliament (MP), has initiated legal proceedings against fellow MP Chris Clarkson following defamatory statements about McDonald’s participation in a pro-Palestine rally. The rally occurred amidst the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. According to Clarkson, McDonald’s comments at the rally presented a justification for the violent actions of Hamas, resulting in McDonald’s suspension from the parliamentary Labour Party.
In his allegedly defamatory post, Clarkson featured a video of McDonald’s speech where McDonald used the phrase “Between the River and the Sea.” UK’s Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, has posited that this phrase is antisemitic and denotes a call for the destruction of Israel.
In the legal proceedings begun on Friday, McDonald asserted that Clarkson’s post was highly defamatory and distorted his comments’ intent. McDonald has since sent a libel claim to Clarkson marking the beginning of the proceedings.
In his defense, McDonald clarified that he was making a call for peace in the Israel-Gaza conflict and lobbying for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire. This call is not considered controversial within the UK, which currently promotes a humanitarian pause in the conflict.
More controversy ensued when MP Paul Bristow was dismissed for writing a letter to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, pushing for a ceasefire and drawing a distinction between ordinary Palestinians and Hamas.
The campaign group Momentum, and the Labour Muslim Network have raised concerns over McDonald’s suspension.
