Seattle Judge Turns to Harry Potter-Inspired House Points System to Encourage Electronic Court Filings

Surprising as it may seem, a judge from Seattle recently took a peculiar approach to motivate lawyers to transition from traditional paper filings to electronic filing methods. Drawing inspiration from the popular Harry Potter series, the judge employed a ‘house point system’ to gamify the filing process in an attempt to reduce waste and improve efficiency. While it may seem a whimsical innovation, the persistence of paper filings in the digital age of 2023 does indeed challenge our sense of technological progress and the need to employ unconventional methods.

The initiator of this system, a former court clerk who ascended the bench, aimed to steer attorneys towards more modern, sustainable filing methods. According to The Stranger, King County District Court Judge, Masaniai, was inspired to create this system after multiple attorneys handed him physical paperwork during a day’s hearings. As an impromptu joke, Masaniai made up a penalty of ‘minus two points to Hufflepuff’ for using paper, giving birth to the idea.

Lawyers started sorting themselves into ‘houses’ of Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw – names that are instantly recognizable to any fan of J.K. Rowling’s series. Masaniai then started to track points using an online form, assigning each ‘house’ 25 points to start and went on to award or deduct points based on the mode of filing – paper or electronic.

However, this innovative method was short-lived, as Judge Masaniai had concerns that defendants might misinterpret this intra-legal fraternity game as a possible infringement on their rights. The Harry Potter-themed initiative was discontinued in mid-October 2023, resulting in a decrease in electronic filings thereafter. This leaves us reflecting upon the need for the legal profession, like many others, to embrace and adapt to digital advancements for the betterment of processes and the environment.
