Justice Prevails: Charlie Adelson Found Guilty in Law Professor Dan Markel’s Murder Case

Nine years after the murder of law professor Dan Markel, a jury has rendered a guilty verdict against Charlie Adelson, who was accused of orchestrating the heinous crime. Markel was murdered in his driveway by gunmen Sigfredo Garcia and Luis Rivera in July 2014. Initially, suspicion leaned towards a murder-for-hire plot, as Rivera revealed after their apprehension that their assignment had been secured because “the lady wants her two kids back.”

Despite immediate suspicions and evidence, building a solid case against Charlie Adelson was a lengthy process. The gunmen, Garcia and Rivera, were quickly incarcerated whilst Katherine Magbanua, Garcia’s children’s mother and a key figure in this case, managed to secure a mistrial in her first trial.

Progress in the case significantly accelerated when cutting-edge technology allowed the extraction and examination of previously inaccessible audio from surveillance recordings of Magbanua and Adelson. Following this breakthrough, Magbanua agreed to cooperate, leading finally to Adelson’s arrest.

In terms of sentencing, because the case was not pursued as a capital case, Adelson could potentially face life in prison at the conclusion of his sentencing in December. However, this might not be the end of the saga. David Lat, a prior editor of Above The Law who has been closely following the case since the outset, suggests that further charges could potentially be levied against Dan Markel’s mother-in-law, Donna Adelson.

Nevertheless, apart from any unexpected turns, this case seems to be drawing towards a close. In this regard, Gibson Dunn partners Orin Snyder and Matt Benjamin, acting for Markel’s parents, expressed gratitude for the painstaking work carried out by law enforcement and prosecutors to bring this complicated case to this advancing stage.
