The legal team of Steve Bannon, a longtime adviser to former President Donald Trump, is seeking an appeals panel to overturn Bannon’s contempt of Congress conviction. David Schoen, Bannon’s attorney, argued that his client’s constitutional rights were violated, claiming that U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols barred him from explaining the reason behind Bannon’s non-compliance regarding the subpoena issued to him.
Bannon was found guilty of two counts last year for his refusal to testify and, furthermore, his reluctance to provide documents to the investigative congressional committee, which was looking into the U.S. Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.
Nevertheless, Schoen insists that Bannon’ s decisions were in adherence to legal advice. Legal professionals familiar with the case will continue to follow the appellate arguments and await any potential implications for future cases involving subpoenas and constitutional rights.
