Last week, over 170 leading law firms issued an open letter to deans of law schools, raising alarms about reported incidences of antisemitism and Islamophobia on campus. To date, responses from the schools have largely ranged from silence to outright confusion.
Several deans reached out to Law.com revealing their schools’ continued commitment to shielding students from hate speech and acts of harassment. However, others have voiced an uncertainty about the objective of this letter, which concludes with a call to establish a “respectful dialogue” with law firms about these issues.
Indeed, this confusion is encapsulated by the statement from one dean who said, “Of course, we join the law firms in condemning antisemitism and Islamophobia. I am unsure, though, what the letter is asking the schools to do.”
Many await further discussion and clarity on the matter as the legal fraternity grapples with these crucial issues of communal harmony and respect in law school environments.
