In a noteworthy shift in policy, Ohio has joined the ranks of states adopting legislation aimed at monitoring and regulating adult-use cannabis. This significant change came about as a result of Ohio Issue 2, which Ohio voters approved on November 7, 2023, despite vehement opposition from the state governor. This milestone allows Ohio to join the roster as the 24th state within the USA to approve adult-use cannabis.
Furthermore, Ohio did not stand alone in enacting such reforms in 2023. Ohio’s decision to adopt legal, adult-use cannabis follows similar legislative advancements in Delaware and Minnesota. However, these two states opted for a different route, with acts initiated by their respective state legislatures.
It is not unwarranted to say that the last few years have marked a distinctive trend in the evolution of cannabis legalization across the United States. With Ohio becoming the third state in a single year to sanction the adult use of cannabis, it is clear that attitudes and laws around cannabis use and regulation continue to evolve.
