Senate Confirms Immigration Rights Attorney Mónica Ramírez Almadani to Federal Trial Court Seat in Los Angeles

Mónica Ramírez Almadani, an immigrant rights attorney well-known for heading and supporting lawsuits against immigration policies during the Trump administration, has been appointed to a seat on the federal trial court located in Los Angeles.

The Senate, in a 54-44 vote on Thursday, confirmed Ramírez Almadani, who is currently serving as the president and CEO of Public Counsel, the country’s pre-eminent pro bono firm offering free and low-cost legal services in public interest lawsuits. She received endorsement from every Democrat present and Senator Lindsey Graham, the lone Republican from South Carolina.

Before her current position, Ramírez Almadani served as a federal prosecutor and counseled Kamala Harris during her tenure as the Attorney General of California. Her activism and litigation against immigration policies enacted during the Trump administration, particularly those viewed as restrictive or harsh, made her a key figure in immigration rights circles.
