Sports industry lawyer Daniel Malasky has been hired as the chief legal officer of IMG Academy, an established preparatory board school and training facility for aspiring elite athletes.
Prior to joining IMG Academy, Malasky spent five years as the top lawyer for the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a team that saw a Super Bowl win in 2021 under the guidance of quarterback Tom Brady. IMG Academy’s new chief legal officer has not yet publicly commented on the reasons behind his career shift; information about his move originated from a statement on his LinkedIn profile.
Malasky’s transition to IMG Academy has been confirmed by Valerie Alou, the recently appointed vice president and associate general counsel. Alou, a seasoned sports lawyer and daughter of baseball legend Felipe Alou, will reportedly be working closely with Malasky.
The acquisition of IMG Academy earlier this year by private equity firm BPEA EQT in an all-cash deal is notable. The exchange valued the business at approximately $1.3 billion.
In addition to his role with IMG Academy, Malasky holds a position as one of nine directors for the Florida Sports Foundation Inc. This appointment was bestowed upon him by Florida’s Governor, Ron DeSantis.
Before his tenure with the Buccaneers, Malasky worked for the United States Tennis Association Inc. for almost 13 years, holding a variety of roles – the most recent as general counsel and managing director of business affairs.
