A British man, Aine Davis, believed to be part of an ISIS death squad known as “the Beatles,” has been jailed for eight years in the United Kingdom. Davis was sentenced at the Old Bailey on charges of possession of a firearm and two counts of funding terrorism, crimes that occurred back in 2013 and 2014.
The Beatles were a group of four individuals known to speak with British accents. Two other members of this terror cell, El Shafee Elsheikh and Alexanda Kotey, are currently serving life sentences in the United States. Elsheikh and Kotey were charged with seizing American citizens as hostages in Syria and other terrorism offences that ended in losses of lives. They were also indicted for inflicting extended physical and psychological violence on their hostages, a number of whom were American citizens, with Mohamed Emwazi or Jihadi John being another participant in this violence. Emwazi was later exterminated in a drone strike in 2015. Davis has consistently refuted claims of his involvement with this group.
Prior to this sentencing, Davis was arrested in Turkey in 2015 and tried there for being a member of an armed organisation. His trial concluded in 2017 with a verdict that sentenced him to seven and a half years in prison. Upon completing his sentence, he was deported back to the United Kingdom, where he was arrested again in 2022 by UK officials. His lawyer presented various apologies on his behalf during his sentencing hearing.
Judge Mark Lucraft KC sentenced Davis to six years for the firearms offence and two years for funding terrorism. This new development in the crackdown on ISIS illustrates the international commitment to bring all members of terrorist organisations to justice, regardless of where they are apprehended or where their crimes were committed.
