In a move that has sparked debate within the legal community, Sidley Austin has reportedly terminated an associate based in their New York office due to her outspoken stance on the crisis in Gaza. The lawyer in question, Melat Kiros, wrote and published a letter decrying the devastation in Gaza and was quite critical of the position that law firms have adopted in the aftermath of the conflict.
Subsequently, Law.com reported that senior members from the firm had asked Kiros to remove her letter, which she had published on the blogging platform Medium. Her refusal to do so reportedly led to her termination. Kiros’s letter, titled ‘Dear US Law Firms’ and addressing the longstanding conflict between Israel and Palestine, gained significant traction on LinkedIn prior to her dismissal.
The firm has indicated that Kiros’s letter violated certain firm policies and procedures. This event underscores the ongoing debate about the role and boundaries of freedom of speech within professional settings, particularly at a time when global politics and law intersect more frequently.
