Ex-Home Secretary Confronts PM Sunak on Rule of Law and Migration Failures

In a confrontational letter to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, former Home Secretary Suella Braverman criticised the PM’s apparent inability to maintain law and order. This accusation is the latest and most significant challenge to Sunak’s leadership to date. The dispute follows the UK Government’s recent assertions to curtail illegal migration and Channel crossings, a move which incited concerns about the UK’s capacity to fulfil its responsibilities under international law.

Recent scrutiny of the government’s commitment to uphold the rule of law has arisen, as highlighted in a report by the Lords Committee. The Human Rights Organisation JUSTICE also echoed this sentiment. Baroness Helena Kennedy KC warned that the UK’s longstanding standing commitment to the rule of law is under serious threat.

In her letter published on the social platform, Braverman praised the administration’s achievements which include the recruitment of 20,000 new police officers, and the enactment of new laws — such as the Public Order Act 2023 and the National Security Act 2023. She further stated that Sunak’s five law and order priorities habe been critical in his ascendancy to the role of Prime Minister. Braverman did however go on to mention “disregard and lack of interest” on Sunak’s behalf.

Braverman criticised Sunak’s “betrayal of his promise to the nation”. This statement is her first since she was dismissed in a government reshuffle and she blasted the Prime Minister for his optimistic promises to stop the boats.

The former Home Secretary also commented on the UK Supreme Court’s forthcoming judgement on the UK’s Rwanda Plan, and expressed doubts about the feasibility of a migrant flight to Rwanda before the forthcoming election. She noted the potential for legal challenges, especially under Rule 39 of the ECHR.

Braverman concluded her letter to the Prime Minister by necessitating a change in course in the imminent future, due to what she believes to be an unsuccessful plan that led to record election defeats.

The Prime Minister’s Spokesperson responded to the letter, assuring that the PM is committed to action and not words, and will continue his work regardless of the Supreme Court outcome. The complete letter can be accessed here.
