Jones Financial Cos., the proprietor of investment management mammoth Edward D. Jones & Co. LP, has announced the appointment of Keir Gumbs as its new General Counsel. In this role, Gumbs will be heading the company’s legal and compliance divisions and will directly report to Edward Jones managing partner and chief executive
Penny Pennington. Gumbs officially started his new role on Nov. 10 of this year.
The former Chief Legal Officer at Broadridge Financial Solutions Inc., Gumbs takes over the position from the retiring Christopher Lewis, who served as General Counsel for Edward Jones for approximately eight years. It’s notable that both Lewis and Gumbs are involved in the Black General Counsel 2025 Initiative, a project aimed to increase the number of Black law department leaders.
During his tenure at Broadridge, Gumbs managed the legal, compliance, and physical securities divisions. He also co-led the regulatory and government affairs section and was an executive committee member of the company’s Diversity Council and Environmental, Social, and Governance Committee. Before joining Broadridge, Gumbs served as the Deputy General Counsel for Uber Technologies Inc., where he played key roles including overseeing internal transactions and assisting with the company’s initial public offering in 2019.
Edward Jones also confirmed that the law department position, held by interim General Counsel Lisa Bertain for the past several months, will be handed over to Gumbs. Bertain, who joined Edward Jones three years ago from California’s Keesal, Young & Logan, will now return to her previous position as Deputy General Counsel.
