IPO Market Challenges Persist, Hopes for Revitalization in 2024

The landscape for Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) has been challenging lately. Despite notable technology deals in September, a surge in other transactions has not materialised, with overall market conditions considered unfavorable for launching new public companies.

Michael Nordtvedt, co-head of Wilson Sonsini’s capital markets practice, offered insight into the current state of the market in a recent American Lawyer interview. He pointed out that in some scenarios, a reshuffling of valuation expectations is happening that is sparking an increase in discussions about affirming deals. This is certainly a positive shift after a sluggish 18 months.

However, it’s not all green shoots. In numerous instances, boards and management teams of corporations have decided to stay on the fringes instead of entering the public market arena. These companies are choosing to focus on nurturing their businesses for the remainder of this year, with potential plans to explore IPOs in the second half of 2024.

Despite the current downturn in the IPO market, Nordtvedt remains cautiously optimistic. “Hopefully, we will see the beginning of a return to a more normal market next year,” he said. Clearly, the hope is for a revitalisation in the IPO sector come 2024, when businesses can navigate in ‘more normal’ circumstances. With business leaders and law firms worldwide watching the arenas closely and advising accordingly, only time will reveal the trajectory of the IPO market.
