Spanish Law Firms Champion Judicial Independence Amidst Controversial Catalan Amnesty Deal

In the wake of a controversial political deal to grant amnesty to Catalan separatists, prominent law firms in Spain, including Uría Menendez, Cuatrecasas, and Allen & Overy, have come forward to express their support for judicial independence. The disputed political arrangement was the result of negotiations between Acting Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and the Catalan separatist Junts party. Under the terms of the agreement, Junts backed the formation of a new government, while the latter ensured amnesty for all individuals prosecuted for participating in the failed 2017 independence referendum. This group includes the self-exiled former Catalan president Carles Puigdmont.

This unusual alignment of law firms in favor of the rule of law constitutes an unprecedented reaction to the political negotiations between the Socialists and the separatists. For more details, continue reading the original article here.
