UK and US Coordinate Sanctions Targeting Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad Leaders and Financiers

UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron announced coordinated sanctions with the United States on Tuesday. These sanctions aim to target the leadership and financial supporters of Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) according to official statements. These global efforts to restrict the operational abilities of these terror groups include strategies such as travel bans, asset freezes and arms embargoes.

The focus of the sanctions is not restricted to leaders within the Gaza region but extends to four senior leaders and two financiers and weapons producers from Hamas. Included in the sanctions are also individuals outside of Gaza, and this expands to financiers in Lebanon and Sudan. In an official statement from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, a stringent stance against terrorism is evident. They underlined that the leaders of such organizations cannot evade the consequences of their actions, even if their control is being exercised from outside Gaza.

Secretary Cameron, in his address to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, elaborated on the objectives of these measures. In his statement, Cameron highlighted that through strategic alliances with the US and other allies, the UK aims to make it more testing for Hamas to function, thereby increasing their isolation.

Global powers such as the US, UK, and other European nations including France, Germany and Italy, have communicated their enduring support for Israel. They also expressed their condemnation of Hamas and the ongoing war. Notwithstanding this, they also recognised the suffering of the Palestinian people and voiced their calls for peace according to the White House.

These coordinated sanctions mark the third instance of its kind from the US to disable Hamas and the PIJ. However, the discord regarding this conflict reflects even among allies. It was evident when Hussam Zomlot, Palestinian ambassador to the UK, commented about the same on CBS News’ “Face the Nation”. He emphasized the need for the US to be an “honest mediator” and not adopt the “Israeli narrative” blindly.
