This counterinsurgency initiative is observed in the wake of a recent clash in the nearby Anantnag district in September, where three Indian soldiers including a commanding officer and his deputy along with a police officer, lost their lives. The laborious week-long operation claimed the lives of two accused militants.

As the dispute over Kashmir rages on, tensions within the region remain heightened. Both India and Pakistan claim the territory in its entirety while simultaneously administering it in parts. Rebel factions advocating for either Kashmir’s independence or its merger with Pakistan since 1989 have gained considerable support, predominantly from the Muslim Kashmiris.

After India’s BJP government annulled the special status of Kashmir, the territory has witnessed increased restrictions on freedom of speech, civil liberties, and media operations. Moreover, a spike in counterinsurgency operations and pushbacks from local political entities as well as community institutions were observed. The area currently stands as one of the most heavily militarized regions worldwide, and knee-deep in internet shutdowns, earning it much international disapproval.
