Chicago Introduces Paid Leave and Sick and Safe Leave Ordinance for Employees

As of December 31, 2023, the existing Paid Sick Leave ordinance in Chicago will give way to a fresh directive: the Chicago Paid Leave and Paid Sick and Safe Leave ordinance. This new regulatory measure intends to overhaul the current system, offering a new dynamic for the accruement of paid leave for employees.

Under this new ordinance, for every 35 hours worked, employees will be able to accrue one hour of paid sick leave as well as one hour of general paid leave. This marks a shift from the prior legislation, which centered solely on the accumulation of sick leave hours.

This updated legislation imposes a cap on the accrual of leave hours. Employees will be able to accumulate up to 40 hours of each type of leave every year. This cap applies both to general paid leave hours and to paid sick leave hours, representing an effort to balance the benefits available to employees with the operational needs of businesses.

Firms should take note of this new ordinance, as it will require modifications to existing HR policies and procedures. Ensuring that existing systems are aligned with upcoming legislation will be crucial to maintaining compliance and avoiding potential regulatory issues.

The newly passed law has been instituted by Stokes Wagner. It is a daily reminder of how the legislative landscape can change and how it can impact the daily operations of businesses. A keen understanding and adaptation to these legal changes is essential for companies to navigate within their regulatory framework efficiently.
