Thankful for Regulations: Appreciating their Role in Corporate Accountability and Stakeholder Protection

Regulations make the world go round, at least for corporations’ legal outfits. These rules – sometimes lauded, often detested, nonetheless shape the corporate world’s course and the legal professionals that traverse that maze. As we reflect on the year that has been and anticipate Thanksgiving turkey, it may be time to appreciate some regulations.

What I’m referring to include the regulations that many representatives of industries, employment practices, data security, and environmental protection have welcomed. Instead of the usual practice of critiquing and calling for amendments or complete overhauls, once in a while, it is therapeutic to appreciate them. After all, some of these regulations take into account input from the public.

Thanksgiving is a time to sit back and relax. It is also an opportune time to reflect on some of these regulations that we are thankful for as we gather around the table for holiday feasts. They go beyond just rules to abide by or avoid, and become enablers of corporate activities and frameworks guiding large corporations’ operations.

While savoring juicy, tender turkey legs (or any other delicacy that you relish during Thanksgiving) this holiday season, quietly acknowledge that some regulations make life livable, work manageable, and corporations more responsible citizens of the world. In the spirit of fairness and justice, these regulations ensure that stakeholders — workforces, consumers, and the public — are treated equitably.

Wide-ranging as they may be, these regulations have a common goal: to provide a fair, balanced, and accountable operating environment for corporations and legal professionals alike.

As we begin this season of gratitude and reflection, let’s extend our warm appreciation to such regulations. They may not be perfect, but their effort to provide structure, protection, and balance in a ever-fluctuating corporate world is commendable.
