On Friday, Amnesty International released a report calling on the global authorities to safeguard the rights of individuals defending abortion rights, which also includes healthcare workers. The document is based on interviews with 48 abortion rights defenders across the world, shedding light on how these individuals face increasing difficulties in their work due to being subjected to stigmatization and unjust prosecutions. The report can be accessed here.
The organization highlights that the legal criminalization of abortion annually contributes to about 35 million unsafe abortions as pregnant women are denied lawful abortion treatments for fear of criminal repercussions. Even healthcare workers are subjected to isolation, criminalization, violence, and burnout owing to their defense of abortion rights.
Amnesty International is urging authorities worldwide to recognize that the defense of abortion rights is key to the promotion of sexual and reproductive rights, and that those defending these rights, must be protected. Agnès Callamard, the Secretary General of Amnesty International, declared that those defending the right to abortion are not only ensuring but also facilitating access to essential services. She further expressed her strong disapproval over the fact that these individuals face hostility, insisting that national authorities need to safeguard them so that they can continue their work without fear of retaliations.
Additionally, Dr. Guillermo Ortiz, an obstetrician from El Salvador, further emphasized the importance of accessibility to abortion services, especially in nations with strict laws on the matter, declaring that they are responsible for providing care to the most vulnerable women who are also the most likely to suffer harm. Ortiz emphasized that access to safe abortion is essential healthcare.
The right to reproductive health, which includes abortion, has been subject to significant litigation at both federal and state levels in the United States. The US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. a landmark decision that enshrined the right to an abortion in the US, signified a significant turn in the ongoing debate. You can read more about the case in this discussion.
Furthermore, on October 30, the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit overruled a lower court’s judgment which found that doctors lacked standing to challenge an Arizona law that prohibits abortion in cases of fetal abnormalities. In contrast, the Supreme Court of Mexico issued a landmark ruling on September 6 stating that federal regulations criminalizing abortions are unconstitutional as they constitute violence and gender discrimination.
