In a recent decision by London’s High Court, approximately 13,000 fishermen and farmers from Bille and Ogale, two communities in Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta, have been permitted to bring claims against multinational oil company, Shell. This decision comes after years of allegations against the company for environmental breaches, including chronic pollution left in the wake of its operations.
The local communities have accused Shell since 2015 of refusing to take action to rectify these issues, with calls for both cleanup and compensation having been continually ignored. Following this ruling, the oil titan is left at a junction between settling with the affected communities or heading to court for a potentially drawn-out trial.
