Connecticut attorney Robert Serafinowicz was handed a 364-day suspended sentence and two years of probation after pleading no contest to third degree assault charges stemming from the September 7, 2022 incident. Serafinowicz had slapped another attorney, Edward Gavin, outside of the Derby, Connecticut, courthouse. The event, rather noteworthy, was caught on video.
Serafinowicz insists he was incited into taking the action owing to a 10-year history of animosity between him and Gavin. The trigger for the ill feelings stretches back to Gavin’s defense of a judge whom Serafinowicz had criticized publicly, leading to his suspension for 120 days beginning in 2015. Over the years, Gavin kept making disparaging remarks about the situation, according to Serafinowicz. He claims he asked Gavin to apologize before he slapped him, a detail captured in an audio clip that accompanies the video. ABA Journal has more on this.
Coupled with his suspended sentence and probation, Serafinowicz also has to continue undergoing anger management treatment and desist from harassing, assaulting, or threatening Gavin.
In a separate case, Serafinowicz faces charges for allegedly stalking and harassing a forensic psychologist, whom he had hired about a decade ago. The lawyer refers to this psychologist as “an absolute lunatic,” signifying a soured relationship.
Serafinowicz explains the hostilities he has encountered over the years with other professionals as a product of his successes as an attorney. He contends that his winning records for his clients while dealing with charges have made him quite a number of enemies over time. He asserts: “I always win. Because I know what to try. I know how to evaluate the case. And I’m not going to try it if I don’t think I have a chance of winning it. My record can be put up against anybody’s.”
