Incidents of cyber attacks have been on the rise, with major corporations and small businesses alike falling prey to such breaches. The latest company to be hit is K&K Glass, currently operating under the household name, Auto Glass Now. On November 21, 2023, Auto Glass Now filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Montana, upon realization that unauthorized access to their IT network had been obtained.
According to JDSupra, the breach has led to an unauthorized individual gaining access to sensitive consumer data. This reportedly includes names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and passport numbers among others.
Considering the kind of sensitive information that was compromised, this breach is potentially serious, putting consumers at risk of identity theft or other forms of fraud. Although it’s common for businesses to secure their digital assets, this incident reminds us of how vital it is for firms to continuously review and improve their security measures.
The digital age has certainly brought immense benefits for businesses and consumers alike, but it’s becoming increasingly apparent that it also brings with it significant risks. As the world becomes more technology-dependent, the importance of cybersecurity increases. There is growing pressure on law firms, corporations and businesses of any size to prioritize digital security alongside their usual operations.
From the scenario at hand, it is clear that even companies with presumably secure IT infrastructures are vulnerable to data breaches. Legal professionals especially, should remain vigilant in advising their corporate clients on the constant evolution of privacy laws and regulations, and how to implement best practices for a secure digital business environment.
