Golden Gate University Law School to Sunset JD Program by 2023-2024 Academic Year

Golden Gate University School of Law (GGU Law) announced this week its decision to shut down its Juris Doctor (JD) program by the finish of the 2023-2024 academic year. The California-based institution communicated regrets about the “pain and disruption” resulting from the termination of their American Bar Association (ABA)-accredited JD program. “Given the realities of the marketplace, our Law School’s place in it and a host of related trends and data, we determined it is no longer viable to offer this degree program,” stated Barbara Mendelson, chair of the Board of Trustees, and David J. Fike, president, in a recent letter to the GGU community.

Back in July, GGU Law had assured students that the school would stay functional for at least the academic year of 2023-24. As a follow-up, in October, the law school submitted a teach-out plan to the ABA, providing a structured process for students to complete their education and graduate from the program.

Golden Gate University’s decision is now made official, marking the end of an era for its JD program. A reasoned move taken in reflection of the evolving dynamics in the education sector, particularly within the legal profession, and influenced by an array of trends and data, says the university authority.
