California Roundup Trial Advances as Monsanto Fails to Disqualify Presiding Judge

A fresh trial concerning Roundup, a popular weedkiller, commenced this week in California, following Monsanto’s unsuccessful attempt to disqualify the presiding judge. The proceedings began with jury selection in San Benito County Superior Court, involving Monsanto, a corporation now under the Bayer Group.

Monsanto’s attempt to disqualify Judge Patrick Palacios from the trial was met with rejection. In response, Monsanto presented a petition for writ of mandate on November 29 before the Sixth District Court of Appeal in California. The corporation claimed that without immediate intervention from the court to halt the proceedings and grant the requested writ of mandate, they would be forced to go to trial under a judge they perceive as biased against them and one of their lawyers.
