In a recent move, Roche Holding AG, agreed to acquire Carmot Therapeutics Inc, a company specializing in weight-loss treatments, for up to $3.1 billion. This deal situates Roche in direct competition with European competitor, Novo Nordisk A/S, who has seen significant growth with its obesity drug, Wegovy.
Carmot Therapeutics, supported by Horizons Ventures, is currently developing three clinical-stage assets targeting obesity and diabetes. This acquisition could potentially enhance Roche’s product pipeline following increasing pressure to bring new medicines to the market.
The terms of the agreement dictate that Roche will initially pay $2.7 billion for the closely held Carmot, with additional payments to follow. Depending on the success of the experimental treatments involved in the agreement, the total payment could reach as much as $3.1 billion.
