First South Asian Woman Confirmed as Federal Trial Court Judge in Milestone Vote

The United States Senate has made a significant move by confirming Loren AliKhan as a federal trial court judge for the District of Columbia. This decision marks a milestone as AliKhan becomes the first South Asian woman in this role. The pivotal assistance in this choice came from none other than Vice President Kamala Harris.

Loren AliKhan’s appointment was approved with a narrow vote margin of 51-50 on Tuesday. As the votes were tied, Vice President Kamala Harris played the decisive role by casting the tie-breaking vote. Prior to this appointment, AliKhan was serving as an associate judge on the DC Court of Appeals.

The choice of AliKhan is part of a continuous effort by President Joe Biden to bring more diversity to federal appointments. This includes a focus on enhancing professional, gender, and racial diversity, given the historical whiteness and male dominance of the federal bench. Earlier, the Senate confirmed Irma Carrillo Ramírez as the first Latina to serve on the Fifth Circuit, another notable diversity milestone.
