A federal judge recently dismissed plans to reconsider potential sanctions against two Dechert LLP attorneys. These attorneys were representing multinational conglomerate 3M Co. during a combat earplug defect trial in 2021 which involved a veteran. This comes after an appeals court in May indicated that the original decision to impose $12,000 in penalties had issues.
The matter was before Judge M. Casey Rodgers of the US District Court for the Northern District of Florida. The focus now shifts towards the administration of a vast, multi-district litigation reaching a substantial $6 billion settlement; one of the largest in US history.
Judge Rodgers has seen no cause to revisit the issue while settlement negotiations are in progress. He considered the original sanctions of $12,000 and rejected them after the appeals court declared them flawed.
