Massachusetts Governor Nominates Bessie Dewar for Supreme Judicial Court

On a recent Friday, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has nominated State Solicitor Elizabeth “Bessie” Dewar for a seat on the state’s Supreme Judicial Court. The move is in response to the retirement of the existing Justice, Elspeth Cypher. Bloomberg Law reported this development.

This nomination from Governor Healey marks her first pick for the state’s highest court, which is currently constituted primarily by appointees from her Republican counterpart, former Governor Charlie Baker. Notably, Governor Healey still has one more vacant seat to address on the seven-member court due to Justice David Lowy announcing his planned retirement the previous month.

Preparing to fill a key role on the Supreme Judicial Court, Dewar’s professional background suggests an impressive track record. Dewar’s previous legal experience includes work with Ropes & Gray, a prominent international law firm known for its advice to businesses and institutions across a spectacularly diverse range of industries.

Much of the anticipation leading up to Dewar’s nomination centered on her reputation as a ‘consensus builder’. This ability, combined with her considerable work history liaising with the Supreme Judicial Court and the passion she brings to the court’s crucial work, has gratified onlookers.
