Trump Targets Former Lawyer Tacopina Amid Ongoing Carroll Defamation Saga

Renowned lawyer Joe Tacopina has become the recent target of Donald Trump’s online tirade. Tacopina, who has previously represented Trump in a civil suit, found himself at the receiving end of sharply worded comments on Truth Social, Trump’s preferred social media platform, this week. Trump’s condemnations appear to be concerning Tacopina’s role in representing him during a lawsuit prosecuted by E. Jean Carroll.

Carroll, the plaintiff, accused Trump of sexual abuse — a charge that did not lead to criminal liability but did result in a judgment of defamation. The lawsuit had significant public attention, in part due to the involvement of Reid Hoffman. The billionaire founder of LinkedIn contributed to some of the associated legal fees of Carroll’s litigation fundamentally altering the dynamic of the case. Although Hoffman did not directly “fund” Carroll, his intervention came ten months into the lawsuit.

The case was of notable interest for the public given that Tacopina managed to keep Trump away from the courtroom proceedings. A notable event was when Trump publicly expressed his desire to cut short a trip to testify in the Carroll lawsuit. Trump’s contentious conduct during the trial has seemingly culminated in him publicly criticizing Tacopina for his representation during the case.

In a looming re-trial of the Carroll case, Tacopina is not the attorney of record this time. Instead, Alina Habba and Michael Madaio are representing Trump. So far, the legal duo has had some success in obtaining a partial summary judgment on the issue of whether Trump sexually abused and defamed Carroll. However, their only expert witness has been excluded from the case.

For Tacopina, his legal journey with Trump is yet to conclude, as he is still enlisted in the New York state criminal case brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. While it remains to be seen how this ongoing legal saga evolves, the web of legal complexities continues to be a focal point in the public sphere.
