Selendy Gay Elsberg, a boutique law firm, has garnered attention in the legal world for superseding Big Law’s bonus scale this year. In a significant move, the firm is set to reward its associates with as much as $132,250 in the form of seniority-based bonuses. This development highlights the competitive nature of law firm compensation, particularly during an era of high demand for legal services and the ongoing struggle to retain top talent.
According to a memo reviewed by Bloomberg Law, firm leaders announced these hefty bonuses as an acknowledgement of the associates’ “tremendous efforts” and “excellent, hard work on multiple, simultaneous trials.” The memo also recognized associates’ vital role in supporting colleagues during court obligations.
Selendy Gay’s advantageous bonus scheme is not the firm’s only recent financial adjustment. The law firm has decided to keep pace with established Manhattan-based law firm, Cravath, Swaine & Moore, introducing a new salary scale that kicks off at $225,000 for junior litigators.
Other boutique law firms have been making similar generous moves in shifting compensation scales. For instance, Susman Godfrey has committed to compensating its associates at levels reaching $360,000, while Wilkinson Stekloff has allocated up to $201,250 for its senior associates. Another competitor, Holwell Shuster & Goldberg, is toeing the line by matching Cravath’s newly set scale.
The personal injury law firm, home to 32 associates, undertook a considerable recruitment drive earlier this year to increase its workforce strength. Among its key hires was Temidayo Aganga-Williams, a former federal prosecutor and senior investigative counsel for the House select committee on the January 6th attack.
In related news, Milbank LLP gained distinction as the first Big Law firm to disclose bonuses for its associates this year. Just a few weeks later, Cravath, Swaine & Moore adjusted the compensation trajectory by beating Milbank’s bonus figures and raising the salaries of its first three classes of associates by an extra $10,000. Additionally, several Big Law firms, such as Kirkland & Ellis and Paul Hastings, swiftly responded to match the new scale.
Associates at Selendy Gay Elsberg can expect to receive their substantial bonuses by December 15.
