A recent verdict has ruled that Donald Trump’s former top campaign lawyer Rudy Giuliani is to pay $148 million to two Georgia election workers. The hefty sum follows Giuliani’s promotion of conspiracy theories about them, according to the decision shared by a federal jury in Washington.
Following a trial on damages, the federal jury has determined that Ruby Freeman and her daughter Wandrea “Shaye” Moss should receive compensation in light of harm done to their reputations and the repercussions that extended beyond, including lost wages and mental anguish.
“The lies Rudy Giuliani told about me and my mommy, have changed our lives,” Moss said in front of the courthouse after the verdict. Freeman further directed the public to understand that the money isn’t merely a compensation for what they experienced. Their lives were punctuated and drastically altered by the conspiracy theories peddled by Giuliani.
Previously, Giuliani was found culpable for defaming the two Georgia election workers. The recent trial thus focused on identifying the amount of damages that Freeman and Moss were owed as a result.
Speaking of the verdict, it reinforces the legal commitment to protecting civil liberties and punishing those who indulge in defamatory practices. The decision could serve as a potential deterrent to similar practices in future election-related processes and discussions.
