Chubb Insurance Subsidiaries Ordered to Cover Archdiocese of New York in Child Victims Act Litigation

Insurance subsidiaries of Chubb Ltd. are obliged to provide coverage to the Archdiocese of New York in connection with a significant volume of lawsuits under the Child Victims Act, according to a recent court ruling. An estimated 2,770 such lawsuits have been filed against the church and other related entities, prompting the Chubb-associated companies to take legal action in June of this year.

The insurers sought to limit their coverage responsibilities by contesting their obligation to the payouts. This move, however, has not met with success. Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Suzanne Adams dismissed the lawsuit brought by the Chubb affiliates on December 15. Justice Adams stated that the claim coverage under the insurance policies was “obvious.”
